Weighting of Roles and Responsibilities

The Learning Design and Innovations Promotion and Tenure Standards reads: Within the Department, individual applicants for tenure and promotion may suggest weightings of their relevant categories to be used in evaluating their applications. […] Given the applicable weights for each of a candidate’s roles and responsibilities, as well as the candidate’s qualifications, the Department Promotion and Tenure Committee will determine whether the candidate meets the standards or does not meet the standards for tenure and/or promotion.

The role of Coordinator, Educational Technologies is a bipartite position, with workload divided between Professional Role and Service.

I request that the committee weight my work (and this portfolio) as follows:

Roles and ResponsibilitiesWeighting
(a) Professional role (Core)75%
(b) Service25%

This requested breakdown falls within the accepted limits in each category as defined in the Learning Design and Innovation Promotion and Tenure Standards document. It also reflects my own personal commitment to meaningful university and disciplinary service as critical to the relationship-building that makes the work of the professional role possible.

At times, in a role like mine, it can be hard to draw the line distinctly between service and the professional role; I hope the committee will see the impulse to serve community at the core of everything I undertake, even when items might be best filed under Professional Role.
